2023 COOGAN SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENGLISH EXCELLENCE
Scholarship History:
The LTAA was contacted by the family of Dr. Mary Jane Coogan to designate a scholarship in her name. Dr. Coogan, a devoted English teacher, taught at Lane Tech from 1969 through 1987. She was dedicated to her students and encouraged them to excel in English. The family wishes the scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding student in English with a significant financial need. Established 2010.
Scholarship Awards:
$7,000 per awarded recipient as a one-time total award.
This scholarship will be awarded to two (2) graduating seniors.
$6,500 each year for four (4) years as a renewable award.
This scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduating senior.
The award can be renewed for each of the recipient’s following three years in college, provided that the student submits evidence of being a full-time student in good standing.
Requirements for renewal will include (but not be limited to) the following: good academic standing in college, including requisite credit hours and a minimum 2.5 GPA; written summary of the student’s college experience for the year including intellectual growth, accomplishments and challenges experienced by the student; and brief interview with a Trustee.
Eligibility:
Lane Tech student with an expected Spring, 2023 graduation date.
The scholarship award is based on academic excellence, good character, and significant financial need.
Demonstrates outstanding achievement in English.
Acceptance to an accredited college or university.
Letter of recommendation from a Lane Tech teacher who is familiar with your abilities as an English student. (Preferably from an English teacher).
Preference will be given to students whose financial gap, after all other grants and scholarships, will be principally satisfied with this award.
Essay
In 250 words or less describe the impact an English teacher has had on your life and please list the languages other than English that you speak.
Writing Sample (*Required)
Please include a writing sample of no more than four typed pages, from class work or a writing project done while at Lane Tech. Include this in the Special Note section of the application, where you can attach PDF files as samples of your work.
